Hood Canal | Waterfront Residence
The little house on Hood Canal was likely built around the 1920s. Mary and Sam Theler bought it in 1936. Eben Carlson and Anne Carlson bought it in 1975 from the Theler estate.
In January 2010, the owners got a call in Chicago from the Mason County PUD asking why their electricity bill was so high. After a little exploration, they discovered that a hot water valve in the bathroom had burst and had been spraying hot water in the house for several weeks. The water damage and mold was terrible.
EVD was retained to create the renovation construction documents. EVD modernized the layout and created a habitable attic with views to the proposed double height living space which is now light and airy with windows on two levels and providing a lovely view of the canal and the wood area outdoors. EVD also added a few signature design changes such as the alternating steps leading to the attic and a door to a new outdoor deck that completely changed and expanded the social areas outdoors.
The cabin needed to be demolished and rebuilt from the studs and subfloor. The non-existing foundation had to be designed and installed. All walls and floors installed are recycled wood and all walls, floors and ceilings under the new metal roof have been properly insulated. The fir that was the floor of the attic was saved and reused—it now serves as the walls of the bathroom. A big ugly stone fireplace was removed and replaced with a small freestanding woodstove making the living area more spacious. We added an On-Demand Hot Water heater.
We selected Walter Galitzki of Sun Path as contractor for the rebuild. He and his crew started work in September 2010. The reconstruction job took 9 ½ to 10 months, until June 2011.
The home design and construction received a 2011 Built Green Designation by the Home Builders Association of Kitsap County!
